BANNER COUNTY: THREE GENERATIONS OF SHAFTO JUDGES
M. E. Shafto, held official positions from 1889 becoming County Judge in
1907. His son, Clarence, served as judge for 24 years, being appointed to
that office to fill the vacancy when his father, Milton, died. Clarence's
son, Walter, served as Judge after his death. The three became famed
as the "Marrying Magistrates". The story is told that they would stop
whatever they were doing, any time of the day or night, round up witnesses and
perform a marriage ceremony without a waiting period.
For this reason, many couples came from near and far to get married in
Banner County.
These are indexes of the marriage licenses on file at the Banner county clerk's office. More information is available on the filed documents than we are able to put on the internet. If you wish to have a copy of the original document, email Sherry Gifford or Judy Leafdale. When e-mailing for documents, please include the person's name as well as the book number and the entry number. The indexes are separated into ten files. You may search the index by looking for either the bride's name or the groom's name. They are alphabetized and in five files (books) according to years. These files correspond with the books at the county clerk's office.
